The late primary and early secondary school years are vitally important in education. Children in these adolescent stages of development go through some of the most significant cognitive, emotional and physical changes in life and they begin to think and understand things differently. It is a critical phase because it opens a period where learning starts to occur on a more individual level.

At Emmanuel Catholic College our learning community sees the advent of Year 7 students joining the secondary schooling journey as a tremendous step in being able to engage and nurture students in a way that reflects this readiness to expand their learning opportunities and educational development.

This change capitalizes on students having the opportunity to be more challenged educationally; be more stimulated with greater access to specialized staff, facilities and educational experiences; be more engaged and independent in their responsibilities and organization and to be a vital part of an expanded learning campus.

We look forward to this exciting and progressive development and the benefit to our students through this extension of our educational community at Emmanuel Catholic College.

THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME:

Year 7 curriculum will cover the Curriculum Framework Learning Areas of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Science, Society & Environment, LOTE and Technology & Enterprise. Other specialised areas form part of these, for example, Home Economics, Design and Technology, Drama, etc.

The Religious Education curriculum will follow the guidelines established for Catholic schools and the Archdiocese of Perth, including provision for working actively in conjunction with the Parish in terms of the catechetical programme.

TEACHING & LEARNING STRUCTURE:

The focus of teaching and learning for Year 7’s at Emmanuel Catholic College will be on engaging our students in an interesting and creative learning environment with effective teaching and organisational practices that produce the most positive learning experience for the student. It would encompass a student-centred approach that draws on all students to be actively engaged and participating.

As with all of our other students in the College, we strongly encourage parents to play an active role in maintaining a close relationship and communication with staff in the partnership and journey that is secondary education.

Year 7 students at Emmanuel will retain a similar but adapted structure to primary practice where the group remains with the same teacher for the majority of the time in a home room situation.

The curriculum and learning structure would see most contact time devoted to Literacy and Numeracy through the teaching of English and Mathematics. Significant increases in the weekly allocation of teaching and learning time in the areas of Science, Society and Environment and Health and Physical Education would also occur compared to a typical primary context.

LOCATION:

The fundamental importance of having a set Year 7 area is not only practical but reinforces the gradual transition whereby students have an opportunity to adapt to a larger campus within the security of a predetermined “home base”.

Adjoining rooms in the already established “B” block on campus are set aside as the Year 7 area with each one backing onto a common (glassed in) resource and computer work area.

PASTORAL and SOCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Emmanuel Catholic College prides itself on a strong pastoral record of caring for its students. It also recognises that the needs of younger, first year secondary students are significantly different and that structures within the school need to accommodate for this transitioning group. The following planned measures form part of this pastoral structure -

The Middle Schooling years are a time of transition, growth and development. Students in this part of their educational journey in our College should feel that they are in a place where, as young learners, they feel safe and secure, are cared for and are listened to, so they can be nurtured into independence and an increased sense of autonomy.
